Why Do We Connect 3D Printing and STEM?

All of the STEM fields are constantly exploring new areas, trying to uncover new methods and advance the knowledge of the human race in different ways. And a 3D printer can help STEM to transition from theory and ideas, to practical solutions in a quick and inexpensive way, where the scientists, mathematicians and engineers do not need to rely on external manufacturers.

At the same time, a 3D printer for schools can promote STEM activities for kids, allowing new generations to get interested in the various fields in an engaging and exciting way, as 3D printing incorporates all the different principles and concepts that STEM has to offer, making it a great gateway for young children and teenagers to get involved early on.

The Ways 3D Printing Works in STEM

Below we have gathered a few examples of how 3D printing ideas can transform the workflow in each of the four major STEM areas, as ways to prototype new concepts, bring new ideas to life, and bridge the gap between the theoretical and physical worlds.

Science

Many schools throughout the world have already begun making great use of specialized children’s 3D printer activities, where students can use the technology in order to further their understanding in many different ways. This active involvement in the overall study promotes greater interest and engagement since printing actual models of the abstract concepts they work with is an effective tool for teaching.

Technology

When it comes to the field of technology, there are too many applications to list. A few examples include CAD, modeling, and programming, students acquire the essential technology skills, then 3D printing complex models that can be explored and tested before being built fully, to help them learn more about the process of creating and inventing new ideas, with the added benefit of getting a physical representation within a short space of time.

Engineering

3D printing is also a popular tool in the field of engineering, where machines can be expensive and complex, yet even the best 3D printer for beginners can yield fantastic results. Both students and professionals can use 3D printers to understand more about structural integrity, mechanical design, different materials and more.

Mathematics

When it comes to mathematics, there are quite a few ways in which 3D printers can help students and mathematicians understand the finer details and specific laws that govern our universe. For instance, a large area of mathematics deals with exploring the difference between 2D and 3D spaces, making printed models a great way of bridging that gap.

The Achievements of Combining 3D Printing with STEM

The humble 3D printer has helped many students, scientists, engineers and professors understand their respective fields in new ways, so we wanted to highlight just a few interesting achievements where 3D printing ideas have shaped the future.

3D Printing in Hong Kong’s STEM Education

The first achievement focuses on using 3D printing projects for students in Hong Kong, where many schools and faculties have adopted the technology wholeheartedly. The technology has been used in various ways, from encouraging students to bring their CAD 3D models to life, to helping them practice and experience the overall process of design and manufacturing.

3D Printing in the Construction Education

A more specific example comes from a university team in Chile, who used a custom printer to build a completely 3D printed house using concrete, with the models designed digitally. This achievement is quite remarkable, as it suggests a future in which we can easily and relatively cheaply create our new homes with greater freedom and fewer restrictions.

3D Printer as a Teaching Aid for Teachers in the Classroom

Many teachers around the world have also begun using 3D-printed objects and models in order to help their students understand abstract concepts or specific principles more clearly. Students can have hands-on experience with a geometric shape, or play around with a set of molecules and generally understand the topics better, meanwhile, their spatial thinking abilities are improved.

Conclusion

3D printing in education and STEM fields seems to be the perfect match. After all every type of project, from small 3D printer at home-based projects to industrial-scale projects using Large-Scale Robotics Technology—such as those used by universities in Chile — is designed and built by people in STEM fields. They use 3D printing to turn their ideas into reality, further their understanding, and generate new innovations, which is truly wonderful.

New Launch Mini 3D Printer – Geeetech M1 https://www.geeetech.com/blog/news/new-arrival/new-launch-mini-3d-printer-geeetech-m1/ Tue, 25 Feb 2025 15:38:23 +0000 https://www.geeetech.com/blog/?p=12714 Get ready for the next generation of our Geeetech 3D printer with the Geeetech M1 Mini printer that will be available for presale on the official website starting February 25, 2025. Geeetech M1 small 3D printer will deliver top-quality results in less than 30 minutes, compared to the average of 1 hour for regular 3D printers. We are very excited to finally be sharing all the details, so keep reading below!

Geeetech M1

High-Speed & Premium Quality Print

For the Geeetech M1 we have focused on designing a fast and portable 3D printer that can deliver quality prints whether you are a beginner or seasoned pro. This is made possible due to the large-capacity nozzle that is combined with a direct drive extruder, a 50W hot-end heating rod, a heated bed and a large-size model cooling fan, resulting in a printing speed of up to 250mm/s.

We have also been designing the custom firmware for our small 3D printer, which comes with 2 advanced algorithms out of the box.
With the input shaping firmware, the M1 printer minimizes vibrations and ringing artifacts in the 3D prints, allowing you to print at much higher speeds without reducing the quality.

Using the pressure advance functionality, you will see the results in form of a more consistent extrusion, as our firmware prevents the blobs that typically form at corners or during acceleration of the print head. This gives you sharper corners and less stringing effects. This makes our M1 the best 3D printer for small prints at the moment!

Stable Structure

We have also been working on designing the overall structure for the Geeetech M1 3d printer, making designs to ensure that the entire machine remains firm and stable while printing at high speeds, in order to produce premium quality results, making it the best 3D printer for beginners looking to get started with ease. Some of the designs include:

  • Leather pulley reinforcement
  • Hotbed three bearings
  • Thickened filament bracket
  • Premium hardness plastic
Structure of Geeetech M1

Direct Drive Extruder

One of the main innovations on the Geeetech M1 is the dual-drive gear Direct Drive Extruder with a gear ratio of up to 5:1, which allows for fast 3D printing, and provides greater torque, greater extrusion force, faster response speed and a higher printing accuracy compared to BOWDEN extruders that are common on the market currently. Due to this innovation, it also becomes easier to print with soft TPU materials and flexible filament.

Geeetech M1 Direct Drive Extruder

Fully Automatic 16-point Leveling

Another reason why we believe this is a good beginner 3D printer for everyone getting started with printing, is that the Geeetech M1 integrates a high-precision pressure sensor on the hot end, that is designed to measure the flatness of the hot bed throughout the nozzle. This provides a fully automatic hotbed leveling, which in turn greatly reduces the difficulty for beginners in setting up and calibrating the machine.

Geeetech M1 Automatic 16-point Leveling

High Torque Stepper Motors ( 1.8°stepper motors )

For stepper motors,  the Geeetech M1 uses 42*42*35mm NEMA 17 motors on both the X, Y and Z-axis, which results in more power and precision. The direct drive extruder makes use of a 36*19.5mm Nema 14-round stepper motor, which effectively reduces the weight of the print head, while meeting the performance requirements we have set forth in our design documents.

Geeetech M1 High Torque Stepper Motors

Efficient Heat Dissipation

One issue that fast 3D printing is known for is a buildup of heat. However, with our innovative design the Geeetech M1 has effectively solved the problem with overheating on printers of this size, due to the 50×50×15mm large-size blower that improves printing speed and model quality while keeping everything cooled down to the appropriate temperatures. We have even added a cooling fan to the motherboard for the stepper motor drive in order to further ensure proper heat dissipation and reliability during high-speed printing.

Geeetech M1 blowers

Filament Runout Sensor

Continuing with the theme of being beginner friendly, the Geeetech M1 has an advanced detection sensor for filament breaks and running out. This way the printer will stop if the 3D printer filament breaks or runs out at any point during the printing process. You can also resume the printing once you have fixed the filament break or resupply filament, allowing you to keep your print without having to start all over.
And the filament runout sensor with tension release function which aims to avoid filament breaks due to friction.

Automatic Nozzle Cleaner

Based on feedback and results from our previous 3D printers, we have designed the Geeetech M1 with an automatic cleaning nozzle device, that handles nozzle maintenance which is one of the most common issues. This way you do not have to manually clean after every print.
And more, the silicone brush that can withstand temperatures up to 300°C for a short time, and

the brush has a good performance of removing residue and exudate from the nozzle and has little wear. I guess the most important point that customers want to know is whether the automatic nozzle cleaner will interfere with the movement of the print head. The answer is NO. The automatic nozzle cleaner will not affect the work of the print head.

More User-Friendly Designs

We have also designed the Geeetech M1 to be a great 3D printer for kids, as the user-friendly interface includes a 2.4″ LCD color screen with ample space for displaying all the necessary information. The PEI print plate makes it easy to remove the model after printing, and the added 3 high-brightness LED lights provide plenty of light to make it easy to work on the machine or the print at any time of day.

Below you can see a few examples of the prints made with our Geeetech M1, which also uses Geeetech 3D printer filament. The first two images show the soft prints made with TPU filament, which is a flexible material that still provides high fidelity and accurate details, while also being incredibly malleable.

The final image shows a few objects made with PLA filament, which is one of the most common types of filament used in the market. The prints have lovely smooth surfaces without any rough parts, and since the material itself has a low cost, it is the perfect filament to combine with the M1 for some of the best budget 3D printer results available on the market at the moment.

Christmas ornaments (3D models’ source: SabreDesign @Makerworld; Kosteklvp @Thingiverse; Giova @Makeronline )

This is why we have written our guide, so we can help you get beautiful results that will last you a lifetime and become a part of your holiday memories. So sit back and relax, while we guide you through some of the best materials and ideas for this Christmas. Enjoy!

3D Printed Home Decor

One of the first things to decide on when wanting to print any type of design is which material to use. For indoor use we highly recommend PLA filament, as it has great properties, is among the more affordable options, comes in many colors, and with the invention of glow in the dark filament in the form of Geeetech PLA, you can even create ornaments that will look great at night too.

In order to help you decide, we have chosen a few examples below, that we will examine closer to determine what makes them great options and help you decide the best 3d printer filament. You can also design your own 3D print Christmas tree for instance, and use Christmas PLA to get the best results.

Christmas Tree

Glow in the dark Christmas tree( source: Orsmith11 @Makerworld )

One of our favorite 3D printing ideas is to design with a glow in the dark PLA filament to create beautiful Christmas trees that can be placed anywhere in the house for a lovely ornament that gently lights up the area.
If you want to display your Christmas tree during the day, the standard green PLA filament would be a good choice.
You can also get a lot of details on your prints, due to the smooth surface and slightly glossy surface. It is also a fairly strong material once printed, meaning your ornaments and decorations will last many years.

Another favorite of ours is the Christmas reindeer prints. The image above is printed with an affordable and easy-to-use sand gold PLA filament, while the image below has used a red PLA filament.

This gives the models a nice sheen, plenty of detail and due to the PLA material, they are also environmentally friendly, meaning you can print many models without worry. They are mainly suitable for indoor use, so place them in your windows, shelves or hang them on your Christmas tree directly.

3D Printed Tools

Ornaments are not the only 3D printing ideas that spring to mind when in the holiday spirit. Using Christmas PLA you can also create some amazing pieces of tools and containers that can help you hold up your Christmas socks, store small presents and much more.

Gift Box

Festive Gift Box with Removable Lid ( source: TacticalKaoz @Cults3D )

This gift box for instance uses a combination of 2 colors, a simple green or red PLA filament, and then a silver or gold silk PLA for the ribbon on top. This creates a fantastic reusable gift box, that can be used for years to come and looks fantastic.

With this design you can even save money on wrapping paper, as the lid comes off and reveals the present inside. While you could print the ribbon with a normal PLA filament, we highly recommend using a silk filament in order to get a lovely shine that feels high quality and fits the spirit of Christmas even better.

Cookie Mold

Christmas Cookie Cutters ( source: STLCoop @Cults3D )

Since PLA filament is safe to use in food products, this gives you the option of designing your very own cookie molds and trays. Let your children enjoy their favorite animals, movie characters or other designs, and make a lovely family activity out of this simple print.

All you need is some creativity, some PLA 3D printer filament and a few hours to get started. There are already many different designs available online for you to download and print directly, or you can spend some more time designing your very own 3D models in a simple style.

Formnext 2024: Some Stunning 3D Printing Technologies https://www.geeetech.com/blog/news/formnext-2024-some-stunning-3d-printing-technologies/ Wed, 18 Dec 2024 11:24:21 +0000 https://www.geeetech.com/blog/?p=12415 We love exploring the latest 3D printing technologies as such, Geeetech visited Formnext 2024 to stay up to date and learn more about the innovative solutions and methods leading to some of the top 3D printers being launched, insight into 3D printing in general, as well as more specific details related to 3d printer settings, filament and more.

Formnext 2024

What Is Formnext?

Formnext 2024 was held in Frankfurt, Germany, and offered us unique insights into the world of 3D printing. More than 30.000 guests and visitors perused many different stalls and booths displaying their products or techniques, allowing for discussion and learning during the 3-day long expo for all things 3D printing related.

This year we saw that they were focusing on stability and expanding previously established patterns and 3D printing service solutions to increase the efficiency and improve the output quality as much as possible. But of course, there were also many new items and products on display as well such as FDM printers and more.

Some Upgrades of Desktop 3D Printers

We also saw some interesting upgrades in the desktop 3D printer scene, where a couple of manufacturers really stood out to us with their latest innovative inventions.

Bigger and Faster Multicolor 3D Printers

In the space of multicolor printing, we saw an advanced desktop printer using the CoreXY systems, which can achieve great speeds, while also providing up to four different types of filament all joined in the same central hub. For now, the size would still be classified as a desktop printer, which is good news in terms of price once it has finished the development stage.

Active Chamber Temperature Control

We also saw somewhat of a surprise in the form of an enclosed CoreXY printer that comes with active chamber control as the big selling point. While the model was not fully ready for production yet, it allowed for quite a large overall print size of up to 250 x 220 x 270 mm. And the quality of the prints we saw looked really promising so we are eagerly awaiting more news of the actual market launch.

Geeetech Mizar M

If you are looking for the best 3D printer for beginners to get started right away, you might be interested in our very own Geeetech Mizar M model. This is one of the best hobby 3D printer solutions out there right now, offering cheap 3D printing and excellent quality prints.

As a low-cost desktop printer, Mizar M’s features are competitive with comparable printers in the market. Now, let’s see what the features of Mizar M are:

  • Dual extruder: It comes with a dual extruder print head for multicolor prints and has a dual Z-axis setup that makes your prints look amazing and smooth.
  • Large printer volume: Compared to other 3D printers on the market at the same price, the overall print dimensions are also quite favorable. The Mizar M allows you to print designs up to 255 x 255 x 260 mm, among the best dimensions for a standard desktop printer.
  • Silent printing: Mizar M has a 32-bit silenced motherboard which results in a quiet printing environment that will not wake up your neighbors or annoy you while working on other projects in your home.
  • High print accuracy: Mizar M has a +/- 0.1mm accuracy, resulting in very precise models that closely resemble your 3D model. And its layers’ thickness is between 0.1 and 0.2 millimeters, resulting in a very fine surface once the complete print has been produced.
  • Compatible with multiple materials filament: Geeetech printer Mizar M supports PLA, ABS and PETG to name a few, making it a versatile option that can produce both outdoor and indoor prints.

Sustainability of 3D Printing Materials

Another key part of the Formnext 2024 exhibition was highlighting the sustainability compared to alternative methods for printing. Here we saw different 3D printing materials made of different types of sustainable 3D printer filament that makes the printing process extremely eco-friendly.

We also witnessed an interesting invention that used a new type of extrusion system designed to work with recycled filament to cut down on the overall waste of the 3D printer process.

This design has made it possible to reuse old prints and discarded strings of filament, by processing the filament and material that would otherwise be wasted and producing very fine results. We are excited to see how this technology will develop in the future, and whether it will be something every 3D printer will come equipped with once the principles and practical application have been perfected.

Large-Format Printers

One interesting machine showcased was a large 3D printer with a 6-axis robotic arm of 2.8 meters, but not only that, the raised platform bed has another 2-axis, making it possible to create some truly stunning and smooth 3D prints with ease. And the dimensions of the printer allow for a scale that most hobby printers can only dream of.

Large-format printer is printing

Another big 3D printer we saw up close was one that takes vat photopolymerization and stereolithography to a new level. Typically these types of printers are reserved for smaller prints, but this model provided us with an example that has 3 lasers in an overlapping arrangement making it possible to 3D print somewhat narrow but very long pieces with precision and speed.

There were quite a few other large-format printers on display of equal interest, leading us to conclude many of the manufacturing companies of these 3D printers are aiming to obtain market shares for large-scale production with a focus on speed, automation and efficient production yields.

3D-Printing Human Tissue Models

We also witnessed a somewhat unexpected type of 3D printing material that gave us a unique experience in the form of a medical type of printing material called a bioink, that can 3D print human tissue models.

3D print human tissue

We already knew of this invention due to previous innovations regarding stem cell printing, and now the technology has advanced further with additive manufacturing that can produce hundreds of tissues in a single day. There have already been successful results with printing brain and spinal cord tissues, and even skin, leading us excited for where this technology can end up in the near future combined with advanced 3D models.

ABS-Like Resin in 3D Printing https://www.geeetech.com/blog/news/new-arrival/abs-like-resin-in-3d-printing/ Sat, 20 Jan 2024 17:39:19 +0000 https://www.geeetech.com/blog/?p=11364 3D Printer resin is a key material used in a specific type of 3D printing technology called stereolithography (SLA) and digital light processing (DLP). The main technology in them is to cure and form liquid resin into hard models under ultraviolet (UV) light exposure.

3D printing technology first originated in the 1970s, when it was mainly used to create prototypes. In 1983, Chuck Hull from the USA invented stereolithography (SLA) and in 1986 he co-founded the world’s first 3D printing company which was a great process for 3d printing development. Nowadays it is frequently to use resin in 3d printing. Here is the timeline related to resin 3d printing:

What is ABS-Like Resin?

ABS-Like Resin is a photopolymer resin that is widely used for DLP or LCD 3D printers. ABS-Like resin contains high-quality pigments and photoinitiators which empower 3d prints with bright and stunning colors. As its similarity to ABS, it performs well in printing functional or mechanical accessories. It’s a nice choice for printing regular 3d models with smooth and exquisite appearances.

Main features of Geeetech ABS-Like Resin:

  • Compatibility: Our ABS-like resin works seamlessly with various LCD and DLP printers. It is designed for broad market applicability, ensuring it pairs well with LCD and DLP technology printers.
  • Fast Curing & High Efficiency: It boasts a rapid curing time, which significantly boosts the success rate and overall printing efficiency. For optimal results, it is recommended to set the exposure time within the resin printer to either 1.7s or 2s. Moreover, it’s safe, non-toxic, and emits minimal odor.
  • Precision & Quality: It exhibits excellent fluidity and high precision with minimal shrinkage, leading to clear and detailed prints. This makes it ideal for both novices and seasoned 3D printing aficionados.
  • Secure Packaging: It comes in safely and thoughtfully designed packaging, featuring a leak-proof design to prevent spills during transport.

What are the differences between standard resin and abs-like resin in 3d printing material?

Standard resin and ABS-like resin are two different types of materials used by 3D resin printers each with its own set of properties and characteristics. Here are the key differences between standard resin and ABS-like resin:

Material Composition

  • Standard Resin: typically, standard resin is a photopolymer resin that cures when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light during the 3D printing process. It is well known for its smooth surface finish and high level of detail.
  • ABS-Like Resin: ABS-like resin is formulated to mimic the properties of Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS), a commonly used thermoplastic in traditional manufacturing. ABS-like resin is used for functional prototypes and end-use parts quite a lot.

Flexibility

  • Standard Resin: standard resin is generally less flexible and more rigid. It might not perform well during the 3d printing process which requires a certain level of flexibility or elasticity.
  • ABS-Like Resin: ABS-like resin can exhibit better flexibility and is more resilient to bending and deformation. This makes it a preferred choice for functional prototypes that would bring challenges to some degree of mechanical stress.

Post-Processing

  • Standard Resin: standard resin usually requires less post-processing compared to ABS-like resin. It may not need extra procedures like vapor smoothing or extensive sanding.
  • ABS-Like Resin: ABS-like resin might benefit from post-processing techniques such as vapor smoothing to improve the surface finish and appearance. This is especially relevant for parts that require a more polished look.

When choosing between standard resin and ABS-like resin, it’s essential to consider the specific requirements of your 3D printing project, including mechanical properties, flexibility, and intended applications. Each type of resin has its advantages, and the selection should be based on the desired characteristics of the final printed object.

New Multi-color 3D Printers Mizar M is Officially Launched,  With Double Hotend Group Modules https://www.geeetech.com/blog/news/new-multi-color-3d-printers-mizar-m-is-officially-launched-with-double-hotend-group-modules/ Fri, 04 Nov 2022 10:54:30 +0000 https://www.geeetech.com/blog/?p=11269 On October 28th CST, Geeetech released a new generation mixing color 3D printer, Mizar M. Compared to Geeetech’s previous multi-color 3D printers, Mizar M is equipped with two print head modules – “Separated Color Module” and “Gradient Color Module”, corresponding to the two printing modes of “Separate Mode” and “Gradient Mode” respectively, allowing 3D printer enthusiasts to enjoy multi-color printing. At present, the official website has started pre-orders, and the price is only $399.

What makes Mizar M different?

Separate Mode VS Gradient Mode

Traditional monochrome printing has been difficult to meet the creative needs of 3D printing enthusiasts, and mixed-color printing has become the future trend. Mizar M 3D Printer has two print head modules, “Separated Color Module” and “Gradient Color Module”, and is designed for quick replacement in structure. After replacing the print head module and inserting the hot end connector, the system will intelligently identify the print head module and enter the corresponding print mode.

Unique Separated Color Module

Compared with the Gradient Color Module, the Separated Color Module of Mizar M can realize printing a single color without mixing another color when printing models with two color filaments. Besides, it gains a faster printing speed, which can better meet the needs of two-color printing.

Patented gradient color technology

The Geeetech R&D team has optimized and upgraded the Gradient Color Module of Mizar M. Compared with Geeetech’s first-generation multi-color 3D printer, the Mizar M Gradient Color Module has redesigned the color mixing flow channel and a structure to prevent the reverse flow of melting filament. The filament is more uniformly mixed in the hot end. This special design effectively solves the problem of uneven color mixing, and the hot end blocked due to the reverse flow of the melting filament. At present, the gradient color structure has applied for a patent.

Mizar M with a printing size of 255 x 255 x 260mm, supporting auto-leveling and manual leveling, is equipped with a fixed hotbed and 32-bit silent motherboard. Responding to two printing modes, it comes with double UI interaction systems. The machine comes with a dual-drive gear extruder and double Z-axis ensuring high printing quality. At the same time, Mizar M is designed with a belt adjustment kit, nozzle LED light, filament detector break resuming capability, etc.

The Mildest Breeze Blown in 3D Printing | Introduction of e-NABLE https://www.geeetech.com/blog/news/the-mildest-breeze-blown-in-3d-printing-introduction-of-e-nable/ Thu, 11 Mar 2021 15:15:11 +0000 http://www.geeetech.com/blog/?p=11110 Various technologies, as we say, have been packed into every piece of our daily lives while greatly promoting the way we live, the way we think, and even the way how we act. By and large, as technology keeps its influence on us offering us a pack of benefits, we as human beings of the new century can’t even live without the existence of technology.

3D printing technology, as a newly emerging innovation in recent years, gained momentum and is now undergoing a surprise shakeup in this huge marketplace. As 3D printing becomes more accessible, it is becoming more common within the home, workplace, and public libraries, and moreover, it helps boost the charity career. In this article, I would love to get you informed about a non-profit organization- e-NABLE.

Introduction of e-Nable

E-NABLE is an online global community of “Digital Humanitarian” volunteers from all over the world who are using their 3D printers to make free and low-cost prosthetic upper limb devices for children and adults in need. People who are suffering the loss of fingers, hands, or even arms because of innate diseases, accidents, or wars will gain their hopes from such an assistive technology out of 3D printing.

Source from YouTube

Touching stories from the community

“Give the World a Helping Hand”

  • The positive shifts and mutual feedback from the child have made everything come with love. This is what e-NABLE does, spreading love worldwide with every possibility.

Cam, a 5-year-old boy who gets the brightest smile when he laughs, is confident and outgoing, yet he still hides his hand subconsciously sometimes. His brightest-ever day came when he got his first 3D-printed arm in his life. Such an artificial arm swept all his concerns and uneasiness while he felt even more confident and innovative in the inspiration of this printed hand in a copy shape from the one of Iron Man. From then on, he became a volunteer of e-NABLE either, on behalf of the child spokesman. He is even more confident when he faces hundreds of people in front, adults or children.

“He has learned how to turn the printer and computer on, and he even knows how to edit a file with the assistance of other people,” said Cam’s mom, a volunteer at e-NABLE.

  • Everyone is not a sage of perfection. We gain more love and hope from those imperfections.

One day in December 2012, little boy Liam finally got an artificial hand of his own with the assistance of e-NABLE. After several tries and practices on handling his new printed plastic hand, he succeeded in grabbing a ball up with that. His mom, who stood right aside, burst out crying with happiness.

As for the other people who possess a healthy physical situation, grabbing a ball is just a casual and simple movement. But for this little boy Liam and his mom, that is hope. They hope for the upcoming future and happiness in every piece of their life.

The volunteer map

Richard Van As, a carpenter from South Africa met Ivan Owen, an engineer from Washington DC. in November 2012. They started running their 3D printing public welfare aiming to build more “Hands” for everyone who was in need of it. What they had done was also posted on YouTube. As the video went viral, more and more people started paying close attention to such a group.

“If you’re willing to receive inquiries from people who need a robohand, put yourself on the map! I’ve put a user-editable map on Robohand’s Facebook and Thingiverse pages.”

Dr. Jon Schull is a scientist from Rochester Institute of Technology, he had built up a map that connects the volunteers all around the world. It was the map that triggered a grassroots movement. And more than 70 volunteers marked their position on the map within six weeks. That’s how the e-NABLE platform formed.

All volunteers nursed the same ambition, they gathered together on the platform and shared their ideas while striving to design various rebounds for different kids.

What’s the most surprising thing is that e-NABLE not only offers a “hand”, but lets those kids in need liberate their imaginations. They allow kids to choose the color and texture on their own. Red or blue? Smooth or carved? They get what they want.

“Can I get my new hand glow in the dark?”

“I want it to be a Spider-man type!”

Their lives aren’t of darkness, they shine thanks to e-NABLE. They glitter thanks to the great 3D printing technology.

This week in Geeetech 3D Maker Salon LIVE TALK #33, we will invite Maria Esquela who is an active e-NABLE volunteer and leader from enablingthefuture.org, a 501c3 non-profit organization to share some of the projects she has done so far.

Let’s stay tuned!
