Updating Marlin to 1.1.x Version

Hi, i want to make sure how to update to Marlin 1.1.x. is there more configuration needed after installing via Arduino IDE the Marlin code downloaded?
If so, what configurations are recommended or need to set to this printer.
I'm actually having issues with OctoPrint that sends M117 codes with '*' characters and seems that my Marlin version does not support that, and it's have been fixed in the latest 1.1.x

Vert made a super program of Marlin2.x.You can refer to his post then try to upload it to your printer and test.
