How Does a FRS Radio Work?

FM radio is actually a form of digital broadcasting transmissions based upon radio frequency (RF) modulation. Basically, a demultiplexer splits a FM radio signal into multiple frequencies which are then sent out using antenna channels. Once these radio waves reach the end user's receiver, it decodes the audio portion into the desired sound frequency and sends it out as sound or music to the speaker. The only difference between this type of radio and other types is the fact that with a fm radio, there is a maximum amount of audio bandwidth that can be delivered.

With a typical FM radio, you will need a dedicated antenna such as a scanner/decoders. This type of FM signal requires some form of filtering as most conventional devices are limited in their ability to filter out excess noise. With other types of radios, the audio spectrum is simply compressed into a lower frequency (the same as the average human voice) which allows for easier compression and clearer audio. The result is a lower noise distortion and a greater signal to noise ratio.

A demultiplexer is used with a demultiplexer to convert an FM signal into an electrical signal. The resulting signal then travels through an amplifier to increase its strength so it can be used as sound or music. Since the FRS radio has a much shorter range than other types of radio, the sound quality will often suffer at the edges of its transmission range. As a result, many people do not enjoy this type of radio because they cannot enjoy the crisp and clean sound quality that is characteristic of a true FRS broadcast.

The best way to ensure the best performance from your FRS radio is to make sure you purchase an appropriate antenna and properly tuned demultiplexer to handle the bandwidth requirements of your particular radio.
