Extruder not feeding enough plastic

Post by lexington » Sun Sep 01, 2019 8:58 am

Greetings,

I have been printing with my Mecreator2 for about 5 months now and it has been a great machine. The last few days i started hearing clicking from the extruder motor when printing. The printer was no longer feeding a sufficient amount of plastic. prints were coming out with layers that could be pulled apart easily. I suspect the clicking from the extruder motor was from kick back from not being able to feed the plastic.

Anyhow, i figured that maybe the nozzle was just getting clogged from much use. I had purchased the aluminium feeder from geeetech and figured that now would be a good time to change it. I changed the entire extruder assembly. New motor, new feeder, new nozzle, new tube. 100% change out. The problem remains. It still clicks and it still fails to feed enough plastic. I'm getting very poor prints.

Please help me with any advice. I don't know what to do from here. What else can cause this problem besides the extruder assembly?

Thank you for any assistance that you can provide.

Hi, You can check if your extruder motor is working properly.
And you can try to exchange the motor wires of other axes with the extruder motor wires.
Or exchange the driver board to see the situation.
I hope this can help you.

I am certain that I have a good motor. I have used 2 different motors and they both act the same.
I don't have another computer board that I can try so that is out.

I tried turning down the print speed and it improved the problem. I turned it down more and when I reached 60% speed the problem stopped. It took much longer but the completed print was very good quality again. I tried slowly turning the speed back up but the problem returned. It slowly gets worse as I approach 100%.

So at least I am printing again but how can I reclaim the lost speed? I hope this extra clue helps with diagnoses. Thank you for your help.

Hi, You can check if your Teflon tube is fully connected.
Or can you provide a specific video or a specific print image?
So that we can solve the problem better. :D

The teflon tube is as it should be. I don't see any issue there.
I have a new symptom though. The temperature reading had been normal so far but now it is reading very low. I'm sure my printer is not near freezing. Does this mean i need to order a temperature sensor?

Hi, You can check if your hot end thermistor is fully connected;

If you don't have a multimeter, try unplugging the hot end on the motherboard.
Check the display. If the temperature is negative, the motherboard has no problem.

It may be necessary to replace the hot end;
If you have a multimeter, you can measure the thermistor at the hot end.

I hope this can help you.

I replaced the thermistor and everything is working again. I'm not sure why the temperature took so long to read incorrectly. I had already been having trouble for a week at that point. Perhaps it was failing a little at a time. Anyhow, it works now so thank you for your advice.
