Problem setting up E180

Hi, My brother bought me an E180 for Christmas and I have only just got round to setting it up (total beginner!!)
I am having an issue when trying to level the printer. The instructions are to switch on the printer, press control then control, home, then the 'house' symbol in the middle. When I do this the printer arm goes to the top but rather than stopping at the top it just keeps on trying to go higher, judders and makes a very loud clicking noise. The only way of stopping this is to turn the machine off. When I turn the machine back on and press control, home 'house'again it just continues to judder at the top of the Z axis, and I can only switch it off again. It's as though it isn't sensing it is at the top. I thought there may be some packing matrerial someweher to remove the forst time of use but I can't see anything.
Like I say I am a total beginner and am clueless what might be wrong so any help is very much appreciated.
