Iduino GT2560 Revision 1 serial interface malfunction

Hello,

I have a iduino 2560 Revision 1. I have been connecting it to a windows PC using the USB to serial interface. It has stopped working. It is still detected by the PC and the arduino software displays the model number however when I open the serial monitor program it prints a series of random characters on the screen.
I should mention that I have replaced the usb cable and I have also tried to connect to the board using another PC with the same results.

I have read that I can reinstall the serial interface firmware in DFU mode. Will this help?
How can I do this on the iduino 2560 revision 1 board?
