The Mystery of Random "Y" axis shifted layers

It seems I've been doing nothing but troubleshoot issues of late and hopefully this is it for now!!

I've had this nagging issue of random "Y" axis shifts in layers as this picture shows

I did the obvious and tinkered with the V-REF of the motor driver and put a much bigger fan over the drivers for cooling but I was still getting the odd "Y axis slip. I'd feel the motor and it was relatively cool so it was obviously something else.

The when trying to print a 20T GT2 pulley it was failing every time (its in the pic above) and I'd hear a mechanical "clunk!" when it failed. I then remembered seeing in the RepRap troubleshooting guide for shifted layers that motion settings can cause this problem, (RepRap Guide here https://reprap.org/wiki/Shifted_layers)

There was some recommended speeds to try which were much much lower than in my setup so I tried them and hey presto it worked and printed the pulley.

It was very slow compared to what I had previously but at least I have the answer now and I can experiment till I find that happy compromise

Cheers

Thank you _kaktus_, your comment is much appreciated.

I bought this 3D printer thinking it might be a good mind challenge and it certainly has been plus frustrating and rewarding all wrapped up in one!!

It's all fun and learning the design and then digital manufacture give a sense of achievement. The main parts I'm printing at the moment are for a CNC Engraver I'm building. I've got the "Digital Build Bug!" I also recently made an Arduino Indexer that I can attach to my Lathe and ultimately my Mill. That's what the 20T GT2 pulley was for.
